Arizona Moving Checklist for Moms: What to Do Before, During, and After Your Move

A steady, family-first plan for the details that make a move feel manageable—from school questions and home-buying coordination to getting through your first hot week in Arizona.

By Jenna Jacques, Arizona real estate professional and local mom · November 4, 2026

A family move has a way of turning one big decision into dozens of small ones: when to enroll, how to keep the household running, what to pack last, and how to compare homes from another state. You do not need every answer on day one. Use this Arizona moving checklist to pace the work, share it with your partner or support person, and confirm time-sensitive details with the district, utility, carrier, or provider responsible for them.

The 90/60/30-day markers are planning prompts, not deadlines. Shift them to fit your lease, school calendar, contract, work schedule, and move date. A free Mom’s Guide to Moving to Arizona offers a printable overview, while Jenna’s community quiz can help you organize what matters before you narrow your home search.

01 · Set your foundation

About 90 days before: set priorities and build your move plan.

Start with the pieces that affect the rest of the plan. Choose a target arrival window, list the people and places your household needs to reach regularly, and make one shared folder for addresses, estimates, school contacts, contracts, and receipts.

  • Write down a comfortable purchase or rental budget, monthly cost range, financing status, and the date you need keys or a place to stay.
  • Make a family priorities list: bedrooms, work or study space, outdoor needs, commute, care arrangements, pets, and activities.
  • Shortlist areas to research—perhaps Scottsdale, Phoenix, Paradise Valley, 85254, Arcadia, North Scottsdale, Gilbert, or Chandler—then compare specific addresses and routines rather than assuming a whole city fits one way.
  • Get estimates from movers and ask about inventory, valuation coverage, packing, storage, delivery windows, cancellation terms, and what is excluded. Keep copies of signed documents.
  • Begin sorting and measuring large furniture. Set aside items to donate or sell before the packing rush starts.
  • If buying, talk with a lender and a real estate professional early enough to understand pre-approval, remote-tour expectations, and the contract timeline.

02 · Turn the plan into appointments

About 60 days before: confirm schools, providers, and help.

This is a useful time to gather requirements and ask questions, even if your final address is not settled. Keep notes about who gave each answer and when to check again. Policies and availability can change, so confirm again once your address and dates are firm.

  • Contact the school district or districts relevant to the homes you are considering; ask which documents, dates, programs, and transportation details apply to your child and intended school year.
  • Request school, medical, dental, therapy, and childcare records through the appropriate providers, and ask how to transfer them securely.
  • Compare moving-company terms and reserve a mover if the timing works. Confirm arrival windows and a backup plan if closing or possession shifts.
  • Review your current lease or home-sale obligations and learn the notice, key-return, and cleaning requirements.
  • Ask the destination utility providers what they need to start service at your eventual address and on your move-in date.
  • Research local options for childcare, pet care, youth sports, lessons, and community programs; write down application or registration dates and verify openings directly.

03 · Keep school research address-first

School enrollment research starts with the exact property address.

An Arizona city name, ZIP code, nearby campus, or listing description does not establish an attendance boundary or guarantee a place. For each home you seriously consider, identify the relevant district, check its current locator or boundary information for the exact street address and grade, then contact enrollment staff to confirm the intended school year’s rules and steps. Keep the guidance neutral: no school ranking can tell you what will suit your child or confirm assignment.

As examples of official starting points, PVSchools’ enrollment information and Scottsdale Unified’s regular-enrollment page explain their own processes. They are not confirmation that a particular property belongs to either district. Ask the district directly about documentation, capacity, transportation, open enrollment or program applications, and any boundary questions before making a housing decision.

Keep an address-by-address note

  • Property address and date you checked
  • District and grade-level boundary confirmed by district staff
  • Current enrollment steps, required records, and important dates
  • Questions to recheck if the address, school year, or plans change

04 · Protect the last month

About 30 days before: make the last month easier on everyone.

  • Confirm mover dates, arrival address, access instructions, payment method, and inventory. Ask who to call if the truck or closing is delayed.
  • Submit a change of address through the official USPS Change-of-Address form , and separately update banks, insurance, subscriptions, employers, and other accounts.
  • Plan vehicle and driver-record updates using official Arizona MVD Now information; confirm applicable requirements and timing for your situation.
  • Pack a first-night bin for each child: bedding, pajamas, familiar comfort items, toiletries, a change of clothes, snacks, and any school or medication essentials.
  • Photograph electronics connections, label boxes by room and priority, and keep valuables, records, prescriptions, chargers, and essential documents with you.
  • Confirm any enrollment appointment, childcare start date, pet travel or boarding reservation, and time-sensitive prescription refill.

05 · Prepare for the desert climate

Utilities and Arizona heat: plan for a comfortable arrival.

Before move-in, contact the electric, water, gas, and waste-service providers responsible for the exact property. Provider and service areas vary—even nearby homes can differ. Ask about start dates, deposits, account setup, meter access, billing options, and which services the landlord, HOA, or city handles. Schedule internet installation and keep confirmation numbers in your move folder.

Arizona heat makes arrival timing and hydration worth planning. Review the National Weather Service Phoenix heat-safety guidance for current safety information. For a summer move, plan loading and unloading around current conditions, keep water accessible, avoid leaving children or pets in vehicles, and make a cool, air-conditioned room your first priority. Confirm the home’s cooling system is operating and know whom to contact if it is not.

  • Pack water, sun protection, and light clothing where you can reach them.
  • Set up electricity and cooling before the moving truck arrives when possible.
  • Check smoke alarms, exterior locks, window coverings, and the path from vehicle to home.
  • Ask about irrigation, pool, and landscape controls during the home walkthrough if they apply.

06 · Coordinate a remote home purchase

Buying from out of state: coordinate the home and move calendars.

When you cannot visit every home, ask for a consistent live or recorded walkthrough that includes the street approach, room transitions, closets, windows, outdoor areas, noise, and details not obvious in listing photos. Video can help you compare; it does not replace inspections, disclosures, document review, or your own judgment about condition.

Keep a written timeline for financing, inspection access, contract deadlines, appraisal, closing, possession, utilities, and movers. Confirm the exact possession date and key handoff before booking a nonrefundable move. Ask your lender, title or escrow contact, and real estate professional which steps can be completed remotely, how identity and signing requirements work, and what happens if a deadline or closing date changes.

If new construction is on your shortlist, compare its written schedule, selection deadlines, inspection access, and temporary-housing plan with resale options. 07 · Keep the essentials close

Moving-day logistics: make one small zone feel settled.

Keep a day bag with IDs, contracts, keys, medications, chargers, snacks, water, basic cleaning supplies, paper towels, toilet paper, and a small first-aid kit. Keep children’s favorite items and essential documents out of the moving truck. Before leaving, take final meter or room-condition photos if relevant, check closets and storage, and return keys according to your agreement.

At the Arizona home, confirm access and utilities, walk through the property, note any immediate concern, and locate the breaker panel, water shutoff, thermostat, and community rules. Unpack beds, bathroom basics, and a simple meal setup first. If the home is not ready on schedule, use the backup lodging and pet-care details you saved.

08 · Make the first days gentler

Your first week in Arizona: settle the essentials before the extras.

  • Confirm your utilities, internet, cooling, locks, smoke alarms, and trash or recycling schedule.
  • Finish school enrollment directly with the district and ask about calendars, transportation, arrival routines, and who to contact with questions.
  • Locate a nearby grocery store, pharmacy, urgent care option, playground, and your most-used daily routes.
  • Unpack children’s rooms and familiar items first; leave nonessential boxes until you have a better sense of the home.
  • Give everyone a little breathing room. One meal, one walk, or one familiar routine can be enough for a first day.

09 · Rebuild the weekly rhythm

Pets, youth activities, and local vendors: build your support map.

Pets: update identification and veterinary records, ask your veterinarian about travel and warm-weather precautions, and check the property’s HOA or lease rules for pets, fencing, and shared spaces. On arrival, inspect gates and provide shade and water before exploring. Keep your pet’s routine and familiar bedding close.

Youth activities: list the sports, arts, camps, clubs, and outdoor activities your children enjoy. Check the provider’s current age groups, season dates, locations, fees, registration window, and availability directly. Official starting points include the City of Phoenix parks and facilities directory and Scottsdale youth and teen programs ; check city or provider pages for the community and program that actually serve your address.

Local vendors: collect names for a pediatrician, dentist, veterinarian, childcare, house cleaner, handyman, pool or yard service if needed, and emergency contacts. Ask neighbors or trusted local contacts for introductions, then check credentials, insurance, references, scope, price, and availability for yourself. A recommendation is a starting point, not a guarantee.

Keep your Arizona move moving at your family’s pace.

You can make a clear plan without pretending every detail is settled. Use the 85254 address-first home-search guide when you are comparing that area, and bring your questions to Jenna when you want help connecting home, neighborhood, and timing.

This checklist is general planning information, not legal, tax, insurance, lending, medical, or school advice. Rules, schedules, service areas, and availability can change. Confirm current requirements with the responsible school district, government office, utility, mover, medical provider, or other qualified professional.
